Just saw these commercials that these guys converted their van to use used cooking oil from restaurants. I know that it would have to be filtered, but would it be difficult to do? I believe that when the desiel engine was invented it was to be run off of cooking oil. Any clarification would be great. How easy or difficult is it to convert a regular desiel to one that burn vegtable oil?
Change the fuel filter if needed and that's it for the car. Of coarse you can just stick used cooking oil in the fuel tank though. It needs to be filtered and then its acidity neutralized. Then for a final kick is to add methanol to transform it into Biodeisel. Link below give a long winded version. Also Stacy did this a while ago on Trucks in his ';Tire Frier'; episode. How easy or difficult is it to convert a regular desiel to one that burn vegtable oil?
You need to ';Refine'; the cooking oil into Biodiesel.........
It is not easy. you are correst, the original Diesel engine was designed to run on peanut oil. You would need a skilled mechanic, and a conversion kit. You also need to retain the ability to run regular diesel, since vegetable oil runs at a lower temperature than petroleum diesel, and tends to gum up the engine. The petroleum is used to start the engine, then you shift to biodiesel.
Cost installed is about $1500. For a complete explanation see the link below.
