After changing the oil in my car, can I use it by putting the oil in my oil tank? Would it clog the burner nozzle with microscopic metal filaments or something similar? Can you burn used car oil in your oil furnace?
It is possible to do this only in small quantities added to a full oil tank. You would also have to filter the oil well to prevent any sediment from clogging up the heaters filter. I would not do it however. The ease at which you can drop off the oil to places like Advance Auto for recycling is more than offset by the cost of furnace repair. There are special oil heaters available at Northern Hydraulics that are made for this though and perfectly legal to use in your garage. Can you burn used car oil in your oil furnace?
Car lubricating oil is a lot heavier than heating oil.
If you burn it you will 'carbon up' your furnace and flue.
If you dilute it with a lot of fuel oil, you might get away with it,
but at the very least, filter it first, and make sure it is very well
mixed with the oil in the tank.
There are some heaters out there that are made for garages that are made for use with used motor oil. My dad has one and he never runs out of heating oil and he is doing good for the enviroment. When he changes oil in his or other peoples cars he then stores it in a barrel to use for heating.
My oil goes for heating his shop as well.
I wouldn't attempt it. You'll clog the nozzle and the smoke created it by it will bring you more trouble then its worth. Home heating oil and engine oil are not compatible.
I don't know about your burner nozzle but used motor oil is guaranteed to clog your lungs with heavy metals and carcinogens.
you can put it in and try it ..but my life you will regret it
.The furnace nozzle is not set up to run used motor oil it will cause problems. That will be costly.
Home heating oil is the same as deisel fuel. Do not put motor oil in your oil tank!
