the valve cover gaskets were disinagrated and on the rocker arms there was dirt and oil grimed up I haven't taken the intake manifold off yet Ihave a 350 v8 chevy van and I don't want to take the engine out can I get to the piston ringsHow do I know if it's worn valve guides or piston rings making my spark plugs burn oil?
Hi, I can tell you have not changed oil regularly.I would get new gaskets for valve covers .I would flush out the engine and add new oil .I would watch the tail pipe for any heavy blue smoke and maybe every thing will be ok.You may get a few more miles out of the van.How do I know if it's worn valve guides or piston rings making my spark plugs burn oil?
If it smokes when you start it =valve guides.
If it smokes when you accelerate = rings.
To reach the rings you must remove the heads and the oil pan. Then you must properly remove the rod bearing caps and push the pistons out the top.
get a air hose and coupler screw it into the spark plug hole add air. listen to the valve cover and the dip stick tube . If the air escapes into the lower engine it will be broken rings or piston.Air in the valve cover area it will be a valve be sure to listen to you exhaust pipe you can here a exhaust valve there. older cars listen to the carb for intake valve leak
