Can my friend burn heating oil in car instead of derv i say no wiil it harm engine?

You mean diesel. DERV = diesel engined road vehicle.

Heating oil is just diesel with some colour and less tax.

Read the middle section of this page. I won't bother pasting:

Also the last section of this page:

Bottom line, he can (and people often do) run his car on red diesel aka heating oil just fine. He better not get caught though...

Edit: Farmers run their agricultural vehicles on red diesel - they are allowed to. They buy it in bulk and run their heating, tractors, combine harversters etc. They often run their cars and 4x4s on it too, naughty devils! Can my friend burn heating oil in car instead of derv i say no wiil it harm engine?
NO

You're right.

It will harm the engineCan my friend burn heating oil in car instead of derv i say no wiil it harm engine?
The Police sometimes have roadside checks to see if people are using red diesel - the dye is added to prevent people from putting it into their cars and thus avoiding tax.
Heating oil is generally a lower quality than diesel fuel, since it is intended to be burnt for heat and not in a more demanding application like a diesel engine.

So you can, and heating oil and diesel are very much alike, but you would taking a chance to do so.

It would also void the warranty in new diesel powered cars.
of course you will block fuel system totally for a start and damage the engine.dont bother
Not with out doing work to the heating oil first. The heating oil will be dirty, the viscosity will be to high and it will freeze when cold.
yes you can do it without harming the engine but don't get caught it is illegal because you are avoiding the extra tax that is put on diesel.
no. heating oil used in homes is not processed specifically for vehicle engines. when they burn ,they leave sediments that may harm the entire engine block
You can certainly run older diesel cars with less complex engines on heating oil. I wouldn't want to try a modern car though, too much to go wrong. Modern engines are carefully tuned to get the maximum power for the fuel being used - ie. diesel.

TallPaul - red diesel is not heating oil. It's diesel, sometimes lower grade, to which a red dye has been added as it is sold at a lower tax rate for eg. agricultural use.

I'm fairly sure you will be prosecuted if you are caught using heating oil or red diesel in your car - all because of the lower tax rates on these fuels.
As some people who know what they are talking about have already mentioned - yes he can run red diesel (heating oil) in his car and many do. It is illegal however as it is a customs and excise offence due to the differing tax levels as previoulsy mentioned as well.

It is for the reason that people can run vehicles on red diesel that the authorities will do swoop examinations on people like taxi fleet operators, goods vehicles and so on to ensure that they are not doing just that.

I do beilieve however that people who do run it will also mix it with some regular diesel to get some of the additives that is in one and not the other.

Finch below - heating oil and red diesel are the same thing.
